A part of the NWPEAT team in Finland

During the period of March 11-15, 2024, some members of the NWPEAT team participated in an ERASMUS mobility at the University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu (Finland), with scientific results associated with the project “Restoration of Wetlands and Peatlands in the North-West Region” (NWPEAT).

 

The following actions were carried out during the stay:

  • working meeting with teachers from the host university;
  • discussions with Tero Mustonen, President of the Snowchange Co-operative Rewilding Centre;
  • giving a presentation to university students on “Romanian peatland restoration works – a tricky path from stamps to restored sites” in the Physical Geography course of Mr. Prof. Timo Kumpula;
  • working meeting and discussions with members of the SAMPO project team (https://uefconnect.uef.fi/en/group/growth-from-moss-north-karelia/), a project aimed at growing peat moss species in the laboratory, supported by their cultivation in an experimental site;
  • working meeting with researchers involved in wetland-related projects at the Joensuu Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre);
  • working meeting with Ms Eerika Albrecht and researchers involved in the Bog 2.0 project at the Finnish Environmental Institute (SYKE);
  • visit to the Drone Laboratory and discussions related to the aerial monitoring activity in the presence of colleagues Anton Kuzmin and Pasi Korpelainen;
  • visiting Finnish peat bogs;
  • visiting a thematic trail in Koli National Park.
