Bâlbâitoarea Lake (Prahova County)
Status
The Bâlbâitoarea Lake is an active peat bog with carnivorous plants(Drosera rotundifolia) and other rare species. It covers an area of 1.5 hectares (of which the lake occupies almost a quarter). The maximum depth in the peat layer is 14 m, and the water eye has a depth of 12 m (measurements taken in 2009-2013).
Among the rare species of this peatland, we find the Yellow-bellied Plover(Bombina variegata). No larger than 5.5 cm, amphibians are brownish-brown on the dorsal side, making them “invisible” in the landscape, and they do not make loud sounds, unlike green lake frogs.
